Pool of 42: 30th Anniversary Edition

All,
We have our first two Final Four teams, and, in keeping with this year's tournament trend, they are two #1 seeds. In the opener, it looked like the Gators were finally going to be cooked, down 9 points to Texas Tech with just 3 minutes remaining. But Florida staged a rally, much like they did in their comeback over the Razorbacks two rounds ago. Walter Clayton, Jr nailed a tough 3 pointer with one minute to go, which gave them the lead, which they would not relinquish. Head Coach Todd Golden thanked the San Francisco crowd, who were on his side throughout, thanks to his playing days at St. Mary's and prior coaching gig with USF. In the nightcap, Duke and MOP contender Cooper Flagg held Alabama, who had averaged 94 points through their first 3 games, to just 65. It was only the second time all season the Crimson Tide failed to eclipse the 70 point mark. The win erased the potential of an all SEC Final Four - though the spectre of 3 out of 4 is still looming. If all four #1's make it to the final weekend, it would be only the second time in tournament history. For those that remember, the first time was also at the Alamodome*, in 2008.
In the Pool of 42, the top of the scoreboard is littered with entrants who have had all of their teams eliminated. Catherine Bopp remains in the lead, with Mary Ellen DePaul using the low scoring Alabama game to jump into second place. But with no teams left and no bonus teams to speak of, she will need all of the remaining games to include a score of 73 (with none having a 72) to overtake Catherine. Long time leader Larry Kriz is just a little too far to take the top spot with his low earning potential. Ready to play spoiler is Joan Ganton, who is still dancing with Michigan State. A sub-76 score with a few 3 pointers and free throws would put her in the lead. Charles Santanna sits a little bit further out, but still has both Michigan State and Houston remaining.
At the bottom of the pool, Adam Hudnut-Beumler continues to hold the lead hostage, despite the positive points from Alabama. With second place contender Donald DeCaro having the same two teams left and same point threshold, it may fall to Eileen Rosa to use Auburn to pay the Ransom and relinquish the lead from Adam's captivity. She could make her move with a high score from the Tigers and low output from Florida in the national semi-final.
For our third place leaders, the overall pool leader Catherine Bopp also holds the "regular" (i.e. excluding bonus) point lead. Will Sargission still has the most bonus points, thanks to his 3-pointer and bench point bonuses. Unfortunately that big total is being off-set by his good selection of teams (3 remaining) dragging him down with high scoring negative totals. Pool veteran Neal Griffin currently sits closest to zero, with 16.1 points, but with Florida still remaining, he'll need some offsetting bonus/negative points from the Gators to hold his spot. Bill Lynch continues to hold the most actual points scored by his teams lead, and with Duke still contributing, his total will only rise. Bobby Corcoan has decided that being directly in the middle of the standings is where it's at - now losing both high score and low score equally. Not the prize with the most glory, but 100 bucks is 100 bucks.
The rest of our Final Four will be set by this evening - with a lot of so-called Blue Bloods still in the mix, should shape up to be a fun rest of the tournament.

* Start mentally preparing yourself for more Alamo puns for the upcoming Final Four to be played at the Alamodome:

The last Houston to play at The Alamo was Sam Houston
Tennessee channels the original Volunteer army in their battle at the Alamo
Blue Devils' performance in San Antonio would have made the star of "The Alamo" John "The Duke" Wayne proud
Michigan State channeled their Spartan namesakes holding off a much more formidable force, much like the Texas volunteers fighting off the formidable Santa Ana
And, uh, surprisingly gators are native to the San Antonio River. Though Google contends "While the Alamo is a famous historical site in San Antonio,Texas, there's no historical connection or evidence of alligators being present or relevant to the Battle of the Alamo"  - did anyone check what was in the basement?
