All,
After a perfect 16-0 in the opening round, day 3 of the 2025 NCAA Tournament finally saw a team seeded 1-4 go down. Three of them in fact. While the games are ultimately decided on the floor, much of the attention of #2 seed St. Johns v. #10 seed Arkansas was focused on the sideline. Frenemies John Calipari and Rick Pitino set their squads to duke it out for the 30th time in their careers, with the Arkansas coach leading the all-time series 16-13. On the floor, the Razorbacks led most of the way, though St. John's did cut the deficit to just 2 with six minutes left. That was about when Pitino unveiled his secret strategy - bench the Big East player of the year for the rest of the game. How Bizarre! The Razorbacks took advantage and stretched their lead to 8 and left Calipari the one sitting high on the hog* - despite wearing a blazer straight out of the Nutty Professor. The other top seeds to go down on day 3 were Texas A&M in a 4-5 matchup with Michigan and 3 seed Wisconsin who were outmatched by 6 seed BYU. The Cougars led comfortably for most of the game, including by 11 with just 2 minutes 11 seconds to go. Just 71 seconds later, it was a two point lead, thanks to two 3 point plays, a three pointer, and one intentional elbow to the crotch. That was nearly followed by a blow to the gut as the Badgers had a would-be game tying jumper at the buzzer that missed its mark. The win sends BYU to the Sweet 16 -but more importantly earned tater tots for all BYU fans thanks to the Cougars' Richie Saunders' NIL deal with Ore-Ida which comes with contractually obligated potatoey goodness following an tournament win.
In the Pool of 42, we have our third overall point leader in as many days. Catherine Bopp has taken over as high point scorer thanks to sub-77 point totals from UCLA, St. John's, and Purdue. Unfortunately, only the Boilermakers pulled off a win from that group, leaving her with 3 teams to hold the competition at bay. Trailing her are yesterday's leader Larry Kriz followed by Big Sean Farrell who jumped in the standings thanks to Gonzaga and Drake. Jack Schreiber becomes the first Schreiber worth mentioning, now sitting in 4th place - having both ends of the Calipari/Pitino battle.
At the bottom of the pool, Adam Hudnut-Beumler becomes our first repeat leader. Donald DeCaro seemed poised to take the lead with the big 91 point output from BYU. Unfortunately for Donald, that came with 12 three pointers, so his Unabomber bonus counteracted the big negative total. A sub 75 point output from Alabama in their second round game could have disastrous results for Adam, though, as he would get an unwanted double dip with main points as well as Dolly bonus points. Dave "Blue Anger" Pettit, who also benefited from the Cougars' high scoring night, is waiting in the wings for any slip up. With four high scoring teams remaining and a rare threshold of just 74, he might just have everyone else seeing red.
No entrants in the pool survived the first 3 days with all six teams intact. Only Bill Lynch and Massimo Randazzo have 5 left, with Drake and UCLA respectively ruining their bids at perfection. Meanwhile, Dave Marchisin has the dubious honor of being the first one to lose all of his team. But hope is not all lost, as he still has four of his six women's teams alive, thanks to his selection of the Spice Girls bonus. But it will be an uphill climb. In all, 103 entrants have 3+ teams still remaining.
So far, the Kobe bonus (substitutions) has earned those that selected it the most points, averaging 202 per entrant. That is followed by the Olympics (bench scoring) with 194 and the Unabomber (3 pointers) with 160. Dolly and its team cloning has the lowest total earning just 16 points per entry - but has only had one day of games to earn points. This will continue to grow as more people have teams lose.
Eight more matchups today will finalize the Sweet 16 - and will surely shake up the pool again.
