All,
The field of 64 has already been slashed in half after yesterday's action. It was another day of chalky wins with only 3 worse seeded teams claiming victory (one of which was an 9 over 8 matchup - something that has happened 52% of the time in tourney history). #1 seed Duke only needed 22 minutes of Cooper Flagg's service en route to a blow out win. Similarly #1 Florida had Norfolk State driving around like they had one headlight in the dark unable to find the basket. Two seeds Alabama and Michigan State both struggled early against their 15 seeded opponents - but ultimately proved that "mid majors" were really just mid.* New Mexico provided the most thrilling upset of the day, leading for all but 30 seconds of the first half - but then remaining a one possession game for much of the second half. In the end the Lobos put Marquette away, advancing to the weekend. Joining them is #12 seeded Colorado State, who overcame a first half deficit quickly into the second half and held on for the 8 point victory. So far, the Big "10" conference has been the big winner, going 8-0 in the opening round (led by a dominant performance from #4 seeded Maryland). The Big 12 fared very well too, posting a 6-1 record. Meanwhile, the SEC, which represents basically the rest of the field, was a so-so 8-6. FYI, the "if it were still a conference" PAC-12 was 3-0. The ACC also had teams in the tournament.
In the Pool of 42, it's a new day with new leaders. Larry Kriz holds a 1.3 point lead over pool or 42 lead advocate Monica Heffernan. She has picked up some bonus from her women's teams putting her in striking distance. Right behind them is Kerry Farrell who is currently dominating the family submissions.
At the bottom of the pool, we have the return of Adam "H Dash" Hudnut-Beumler followed by Donald DeCaro. Their position is all but secure, however, as bonus points from "Dolly" replacement teams will only start flowing in from round 2. Perennial bottom feeder Kyle Charters finds himself in familiar territory. Bill Lynch is also off to a good start, with all 6 teams still remaining. Hopefully he is watching this year's tournament and not previously recorded ones.
In all, 6 entrants still have all of their teams remaining, 105 have four or more, while 4 entrants are down to just a pair of teams still in. Those that selected the Dolly bonus will start earning points from the round following when their teams were eliminated so that begins with today's games. For those with Spice Girls bonuses - remember that the women's tournament is a day delayed vs the men's, so there will be a time to kill before those points stop flowing in. Both the Dolly and Spice Girls teams are now listed in the standings sheet for those that selected those bonuses.
Action continues in less than an hour! Current scores are below with complete standings attached.
